How does the library work?

There is no cost to participate. The library works through accepting trades of dahlia tubers and cuttings, and donations of dahlias, cut flower seeds, supplies, or monetary donations.Β 

How does trade differ from donation?

  • Trade: You can send up to 3 dahlia tubers (Fall & Spring) or rooted cuttings (Spring only) of any variety to check out up to 3 dahlia varieties from the library catalog. This means if you check in 1, you can check out 1; the trade is cap at 3 dahlias total per season.
  • Alternatively you can check in seeds and supplies if you're starting out, and the amount of dahlias you can check out will be a case by case basis, with a cap at 3.
  • Donation: You can donate tubers (Fall & Spring), rooted cuttings (Spring only), seeds (anytime), and supplies (anytime) without expecting anything in return.

How does the trade process work?

  • Tuber and Rooted cutting trades are limited to 3 qty per member per growing season, with exception to special circumstances.Β 
  • You must review our Donation & Trade Policies and fill out the Donation and Trade Form. The shipping address will be given within 7 days after receiving the form.Β 
  • When your check-in is completed and we've received your trades, you will receive an email with a password to enter our catalog and pick your dahlias. If you check in 1 dahlia, you can check out 1 dahlia, with a cap at 3 dahlia total.

How does the donation process work?

  • You can donate tubers (Fall & Spring), rooted cuttings (Spring only), seeds (anytime), and supplies (anytime)
  • You must review our Donation & Trade Policies and fill out the Donation and Trade Form. The shipping address will be given within 7 days after receiving the form.Β 
  • Donation means that you are not expecting anything in return.

What can I donate or trade?

Any dahlia variety is welcomed. However, please read the Donation and Trade Policies and comply to them.

Alternatively, dahlia seeds, cut flower seeds, supplies (root riot cubes, etc) are also great.

Do I need to check in a unicorn?

Unicorn is any desirable hard-to-find variety. You do NOT need to check-in unicorns to check-out unicorns. However, we are limited on tubers so we will do our best to fulfill requests with Spring rooted cuttings. Once you have submitted your check-in, check the website often for inventory updates.

How do I receive a password to view the library catalog?

You will receive the password following these steps

  1. You complete the Donation & Trade form to get the shipping address from us
  2. You send in your trade
  3. The library receives your trade, and send you the password via email. Note that you're not allowed to share the password with anyone else

How do I check out my trades?

  • Once your check-in is complete and your trade has been received by the library, you will receive a password to access Dahlia Tubers and Cuttings Catalog.
  • For every dahlia you check in, you can check out 1 dahlia, with a cap at 3 total per growing season.
  • Only 1 tuber/cutting per variety is allowed to check out.
  • There's no time limit so you can come back anytime, but all 3 must be checked out at the same time so they can be shipped in 1 shipment.

How many tubers/cuttings can I check out?

You can check out a maximum of 3 after you send in your trade, However, if you send in less than 3 tubers for trade, you can only check out the equivalent amount (e.g. you send 1 and you check out 1). If you send more than 3 with the intention of trading, only the first 3 will be counted as trade and the rest will be counted as donation

Can I check out seeds?

All Library Members can check-out up to 3 FREE packages of seeds per year, shipping not included. No trade is required to check them out, but we ask you pay a flat rate fee of $5 to cover shipping material and postage.

Do I need to pay shipping when I check out?

Shipping costs will be covered by the sender for all trades and donations except for seed check-out (which is $5 flat rate). This means when you send in your check-in, you will cover the shipping; and when we send out your selections from the catalog, we will cover the shipping.
